Everyone pays the cost of thefts, either directly or indirectly. But everyone can be involved in reducing the opportunity for thefts to occur. Spare yourself the frustration and inconvenience of being a victim of this type of crime by practicing these strategies: Park only in brightly illuminated, busy lots and ramps. Good lighting and the presence of people will reduce your vulnerability to other types of crime also. 

• Lock your car and pocket the keys. Just using the locks can deter casual thieves looking for an easy opportunity.
• Never leave valuables of any kind on seats or visible at all. Thieves know that briefcases and gym bags often contain wallets, checkbooks, jewelry, etc.
• Lock packages and other items in the trunk before you get to your destination.
• Report all suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1. Give a description of anyone you see prowling around or peering into cars.
• At home, keep your garage doors closed and locked. Be sure the service door is sturdy and has a good deadbolt.
• If you park your car in the driveway, alley or street, remove the garage door opener and other valuables -- glasses, tapes, compact discs, spare change, etc., and then lock it.
