Water Service Line Mailer

Village staff has received quite a few inquiries regarding a flyer/mailer recently sent to residents in Fox Point.  This mailer, which is being received by residents of a number of communities on the North Shore, is from a corporation purporting to provide coverage/protection for the replacement of the water service lateral on their property.  Please note that the corporation is not affiliated with nor represents the views of the Village of Fox Point or the Water Utility.  As a result, Fox Point staff is unable to answer any questions regarding the mailer or proposed offer from the corporation.  It does appear that the mailer is a sales pitch meant to convince property owners into purchasing coverage for the replacement of their water service lateral.

With respect to your water service lateral, two questions are typically asked: who owns it and what type of lateral is it?  Ownership of the lateral is divided between the property owner and the Village.  More specifically, the Village is responsible for maintenance and replacement of the water lateral from the main (typically located in the street or along the shoulder of the road) up to and including the curb stop/shut off valve for the property (which is usually located at the property line in the front yard).  When the Village replaces its water main in the road, we will also replace that portion of the water lateral up to and including the curb stop.  Very few water laterals in the Village are lead water laterals; most are plastic or copper.  The Village performed a study in 2016 to determine the number of lead water laterals in the Village and determined that there were about 120 properties with lead water laterals.  Each of those property owners were notified in a letter shortly after the study and informed of that fact.  If you did not receive a letter from Village staff in 2016, it is quite likely you do not have a lead water lateral.  For those who are interested in learning more about their property, please visit the following link - https://foxpoint.ags.ruekert-mielke.com/Documents.aspx - and type in your address (number only) then hit enter.  Once you see your address, you can click on “View Individual Records” then click on the link associated with “Permit” and you will be able to scroll through the list of permits pulled for your property (including plumbing permits that may identify the type of water lateral you have at your house).
